How do you run a campaign with classmates scattered all across North America? Since the Cornell-Queen's Executive MBAs regularly meet in virtual classrooms and work in teams via e-mail and telephone, the geographic challenges were not as great as they might have been. Class co-presidents Julie Chase (Cornell University, in Seattle) and Ian Major (Queen's University, in Toronto) took on the project, dividing up their classmates into East Coast and West Coast regions rather than by school.

"It was important to set realistic goals for dollar amounts and participation rates," says Chase. "We asked each student to give equally to Cornell and Queen's, and we suggested a level of $100 to each school." Major adds, "We gave them the statistics on what others before us had given, but particularly, given the economy, we wanted people to do what was comfortable for them. We all realized that both Cornell and Queen's had given us an exceptional experience. Beyond a fine education, we've benefited from the personal touch that both schools provide. We wanted to pass that on."
