High oil prices can boost the manufacturing

Dean Joseph Thomas outlined a compelling case for why higher oil prices contain a silver lining for domestic manufacturing and the economy overall, and how "the short-term pain of higher transportation costs will turn into long-term gains if national policy aims forward instead of backward," in an editorial piece, "High Oil Prices Could Help U.S. Manufacturing," that first appeared in the Viewpoint column in Industry Week (8/8/08). In a second editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle, "U.S. Fuel Crisis may boost manufacturing" (8/31/08), Thomas offered his opinion on why higher oil prices may help California's economy in the long run, could strengthen the national manufacturing sector, and provide incentives to rebuild domestic manufacturing industries.
