"One Johnson Community" Rallies for Japan

MBA students, faculty, and staff exceed fund-raising goal for tsunami relief

March 21, 2011

The student-run Johnson Japan Club, in partnership with numerous other MBA student clubs, within one week raised more than $8,000 for relief of victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  Donated funds are being wire-transferred to the Red Cross, which will allocate the money to provide food, shelter, healthcare and electricity in a significant shortage.

“Last week, we kept asking ourselves how we could best serve to the victims of the earthquake,” said Yusuke (Bradley) Tanaka, MBA ’12, co-president of the Johnson Japan Club. “It was not an easy question given the remote location and the size of Japanese community here. However, it was the ‘One Johnson Community’ that enabled us to march together and move forward.”

Fund-raising efforts kicked off on March 15, with Asia Morning Tea in the Dyson Atrium of Sage Hall. MBA students and their spouses poured several varieties of Japanese tea donated by Obubu Tea of Kyoto, Japan, and offered Asian snacks and treats. In the following days, students manned booths both in Sage Hall and in Cornell University’s Willard Straight Hall, collecting $8,328, which does not include anticipated matching donations. In addition the Johnson and Cornell folded 2,036 cranes in support of the Japanese people.

The following Johnson Clubs and faculty made contributions or gave matching donations:

·         Old Ezra Finance Club

·         Alan Biloski, senior lecturer of finance

·         Consulting Club

·         Marketing Association

·         General Management Club

·         Operations Management Club

·         Asia Business Association

·         Women’s Management Council

·         South Asia Business Club

·         High Tech Club

·         Retail and Luxury Club

·         Korean Business Association
