Staying connected to his Johnson roots has always been important to Jeffrey Marx Kabel, MBA ’97, recipient of the 2012 Robert J. Swieringa Young Alumni Service Award. Whether he’s visiting Ithaca for an Advisory Council meeting, or working abroad with the Cornell Club of London — where he lives and serves as the executive director of JP Morgan — Kabel is always thinking of his alma mater.

Glad for an opportunity to give back to the school, Kabel was delighted to be asked to serve on the Johnson Advisory Council. “It is an impressive group of people that have been brought together who really do take it upon themselves to support and advise the dean, faculty, staff and students,” he says.

Kabel explains that during the past few economically challenging years, the council has been more engaged than usual in mentoring and assisting students in meeting career their expectations. According to Kabel, being a part of the organization has been a rewarding and welcome distraction.

“It is a true pleasure to be able to ‘disengage’ (as much as one can) and immerse myself in the AC meetings held twice per year in Ithaca,” he says. “[It’s] a good change from the daily grind of business.”

Since moving to London from Buenos Aires about twelve years ago, Kabel has also been active with alumni in both the Johnson School Club of the UK and the Cornell Club of London.

“For as long as I have been at Johnson, Jeff Kabel has been incredibly engaged with the Johnson Clubs of the United Kingdom and of London,” says Tara Taylor Lynn, Johnson’s director of alumni affairs. “He is a big contributor to the club’s success. Jeff is always there if we need help organizing events and connecting students with European alumni.”

Both of the clubs Kabel works with frequently host events that attract alumni, current students, and prospective students. “We hosted an event at the British Museum, which attracted over 400 alumni and guests and was a great collaborative effort between local alumni and various alumni organizations out of Ithaca,” Kabel explains.  “We hope to repeat this with an event at the Houses of Parliament [later this year].”

In addition to helping host events, Kabel also runs a scholarship program that connects Cornell Club of London alumni with second- or third-year UK university students, and enables the UK students to spend the summer studying in Ithaca.  “The scholarship has been in place for about 20 years, has hundreds of applicants, and culminates with the recipient addressing alumni at the club’s annual Thanksgiving dinner in November,” he explains.

Receiving the Robert J. Swieringa Young Alumni Service Award for his dedication to Johnson is an honor for Kabel. “I am proud to have my name associated [with this award],” he says,  “[and] though I am not one who is necessarily comfortable receiving public recognition, this is indeed a true privilege.”
